Writing Update: A Simple Project Part III

This will be my third update on A Simple Project, and likely the last for a while. At the beginning of October, I wrote THE END of the story, knowing that the book would be shelved for now, to rest and be revisited at a later date.

A fellow member of Christian Mommy Writers and a co-author of the A Worthy Love collection, Liz Chapman, talks about Grace Projects in her devotional, Writing as Worship.

There are those stories we write because they are in our heart. They may or may not be something we are ever going to publish. Doesn’t matter. It’s the story we need to tell. And, I definitely feel like this book, with all its 70,000+ words, was what I needed to write from July through October 2025. This particular season of my life has been difficult, and I needed something to cheer my soul. I needed something that didn’t have to be researched, because most of it was already in my brain. I felt no pressure, and a lot of joy in writing it.

Interestingly, it did warm me to the idea of writing about a real person. I have been very hesitant to write anything even semi-biographical, although people have asked me to do so. Specifically, it has been suggested that I write about someone’s family member, or write a book based on someone’s story.

A Simple Project isn’t that per se, rather, it takes an individual out of their historical period and puts them in ours, with all that that entails. But suddenly, researching and trying to recreate someone’s actual story in a fictional way doesn’t seem so threatening. Maybe that was what needed to happen for something I’ll do down the road.

There’s a part of me that wants to release A Simple Project someday, but if nothing else, it was good to practice sitting down to write, not worrying about plot or perfection, and allowing the characters to tell me the story, weaving in pieces of history in a fun way, and maybe poking fun at modern-day things like Brainrot and my beef with Hollywood WWII movies.

After wrapping up A Simple Project, I put my nose to the grindstone and got to work on the next installment of the Separate Ways Series. I am also reworking one of my old books in order to make a good story into a good book.

That will probably be the next thing that I share about: my reasons for that, some examples of changes I’ve made, and my thought process in changing them.
